The history of Devon Rex
The Devon rex is a natural genetic mutation that appeared in 1960 in a town called Devonshire, in England. The Devon was born from the cross-breeding of a domestic cat and a curly furred cat. Its only in 1979 that the breed was given full recognition. At first, breeders thought that the Devon Rex and Rex Cornish were related because of their curly fur, which to them meant that the two breeds could be raised together. Breeder tried to cross-breed the Devon and the Cornish but every time, the kittens were born with straight fur. It was later determined that the two breeds were not related and that they were two distinct breeds.
The Devon will seduce you instantly with his big eyes, huge ears and curly coat. Their appearance is far from ordinary. During molting season, they could almost be confused for a Sphynx.
Appearance of the Devon: They are midsize cats with a strong and solid body. Their heads are small and long. Their snout is short and is accompanied with big cheeks and a strong chin. Their ears are wide at the base and are large compared to their heads. Their eyes are big and have the shape of a lemon. Their tails are long and thin out when you get closer to the end. Their moustache and eyebrows are also short, rough and curly.
The Devon has the advantage of having hypoallergenic characteristics, because of their short and curly fur the Devon does not tend to shed.
The coat of the Devon comes in a variety of colours, every colour is possible in every nuance and pattern. The Devon might seem timid but in reality, they are playful and intelligent. This breed is also very social and loves children. They are not aggressive, which makes them an ideal breed for families. They are little elf’s that will jump on your shoulder and settle there while purring.
The Devon is peculiar, not only because of their appearance but also because of their personality. They love hugs so much that their only desire is to stay in their owners’ arm (if possible, under their shirt or under the cover) whom they «cover» in purrs.
They are very close to their owner, they follow them everywhere, from the kitchen to the bathroom, the Livingroom to the bedroom and even the garage. They are also very greedy and love table food.
They are a joyful breed, curious and playful. They do not stand being alone. In fact, their dependence to human is total, not only because they crave affection, but also because they could not survive without humans caring for them. They love to play, and we can teach them easily to fetch a toy. They love to wag their tail, which is why they are sometimes compared to dogs. They are always on the lookout and attentive to everything surrounding them. They easily cohabit with cats and they generally get along with any animal.
